Treasure Hunting Belgian Style

If you’re a veritable magpie or a budding bargain hunter, Belgium’s Brocantes, Flea Markets and Vide Greniers will satiate your treasure-hunting instinct. More commonly known in the UK as car boot sales. These are something of a tradition in Belgium, usually taking place in spring and autumn. They range from professional antique dealers to amateur people on the street doing a house clearance.

When it comes to the best of the best the town of Ciney in the region of Namur and its 3 times a year Puces & Antiquités Fair surpass most with its mix of high-end antiques and bargain hunt brocante. It’s one of the largest flea markets and antique fairs in Belgium with over 500 exhibitors from France, Germany, Holland and Italy and has 15,000 visitors. What might you find? What are you looking for? A stuffed eagle? A full set of WW1 military medals? A 60’s jukebox, a fifty-piece Limoge porcelain tea set? One person’s rubbish is another man’s gold!

With French speaking Wallonia, less than three hours’ drive from Calais you can jump on a train for a day trip or make a weekend of it.
