Oxford-based hairdresser Anne Veck has won the Hair Trend award at Creative Head’s Most Wanted Awards, held at the spectacular Tate Modern, London. The Hair Trend award recognises the best trend led image of the year.

Anne’s winning image was inspired by her time in lockdown and what she saw in the salon when they were allowed to reopen. She created a collection that captured the experimental essence of lockdown and the trend for colour blocking and bold statements requested by her clients once granted freedom again.

Anne says: “After staying in doors for what felt like an eternity, we all altered the way we think and feel about so many things. One of them was our hair colour. While some embraced their natural tones, others used this time to experiment with colour. Almost like a rebirth or new beginning after an unprecedented time.”

Anne was inspired by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian and the trend for colour blocking which was first seen in fashion thanks to Yves Saint Laurent. In 1965, Laurent paid tribute to Mondrian by designing an A-line cocktail dresses inspired by the painter's abstract canvases.Anne adds, “The colour palette in this image is pink, blue, yellow. These colours all have the feel good factor which is why I chose them. The colour blocking element is an expression of happiness, which we all felt when lockdown was lifted!

“Winning a competition is always a fantastic feeling. I'm particularly proud of this shot as it was quite bold. The model absolutely loved the look and kept it for several months. When you enter competitions, you have to be prepared to lose a lot more than you win. You have to recognise that failure is just another opportunity to learn.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have won this award, especially for an image that was inspired by such a challenging time for the whole county.”

Creative HEAD editorial director, Amanda Nottage said: “If Ginger from Scarface embraced pretty pastels, this is the look she’d rock. Both iconic and forward-facing, it’s a finish you can predict will be all over clients’ Pinterest boards. The blend, the bevel-edged bottom, the beauty – Anne nailed it. Congratulations on your Most Wanted win.”

Established by leading hair publication Creative HEAD in 2001, Most Wanted has become a beacon of brilliance – its trophies illuminating the most outstanding, progressive, and game-changing talents in British and Irish hairdressing. And the Grand Final? Well, it’s the culmination of the competition and the coolest and most coveted event in the hairdressing industry calendar. This year’s epic evening was hosted by award-winning comedian and writer Sophie Duker, with 680 prestigious names across hair, beauty, fashion, business, and media, coming together to celebrate the crowning of a new cohort of champions.

For some years the concept of biophilia has been something of a buzzword in design circles, most often used in reference to architecture and more latterly, interiors. Put simply, it is a term used to describe the human tendency to interact or be close nature and its other forms of life.
