This month I’m giving a shout-out to all the glorious goths looking forward to their ‘Christmas’ at the end of the month. Yes, spooky season is here and I, for one, am a big fan. I’ve got no time for the naysayers who denounce it as an Americanisation of our British culture. The tradition of ‘guising’ or dressing up in costume and going door-to-door to perform for treats has been part of UK culture since the sixteenth century, and ‘mumming’ has been part of the pagan celebrations around Samhain (31 October-1 November) since the Middle Ages.
Also, and on a more personal level, I always think of Halloween as ‘Birthday Eve’ as my birthday falls on All Souls Day (1 November).
