On Tuesday 18 March, Oxford’s New Theatre buzzed with excitement as David Gray’s 2025 Past & Present World Tour arrived. The gig was sold out, with fans eagerly awaiting the soulful music of the British singer-songwriter. Gray, supported by a stunning opening act, Talia Rae, brought an unforgettable night of music that left everyone mesmerised.

The night began with an incredible performance from Talia Rae, whose captivating voice set the perfect tone for the evening. She warmed up the crowd with a set that showcased her undeniable talent, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating the main event.

At approximately 8:15 pm, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived: David Gray stepped onto the stage to a roaring applause, opening with After the Harvest from his latest album Dear Life. From the first note, it was clear that this was going to be a performance to remember. With over two hours of music, Gray delivered an emotional and powerful show, seamlessly blending old favourites with tracks from his new album.

Throughout the evening, Gray was joined by Talia Rae for several collaborations, including a breathtaking version of Plus and Minus that had the entire venue in awe. The pairing of their voices was magical, adding an extra layer of emotion to the already moving lyrics.

One of the standout elements of the night was the incredible light show, which perfectly complemented the mood of each song. The visuals added a sense of grandeur to the performance, making each song feel even more immersive. It was a stunning visual experience that enhanced the live music in ways that only a well-crafted production can.

As Gray’s set progressed, the energy in the theatre was electric. His band was nothing short of exceptional, providing the perfect backdrop to Gray’s distinctive voice. The crowd erupted as he played hits including This Year’s Love, Babylon, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, and Please Forgive Me. These timeless tracks had everyone on their feet, singing along, and fully lost in the moment.

After a brief break, Gray returned for an encore, closing the night with his iconic Sail Away; a fitting end to a truly magical evening.

Overall, David Gray’s performance at Oxford’s New Theatre was a stunning celebration of his career and the new music that continues to define him as an artist. With a sold-out crowd, an electrifying atmosphere, and a truly remarkable performance, this was a concert that fans will not soon forget.

Corinne Bailey Rae’s Put Your Records On snap-shotted the summer of 2006. Her most recent release, Black Rainbows came out 2023 and it is obvious to hear how much she is relishing the full range of her unique voice and, as I was to discover when we spoke, her extraordinarily lyrical vocabulary.
