If you are looking for the perfect Christmas gift for someone who loves cooking, and also has an interest in British maritime history, Galley – The Royal Navy & Royal Marine Charity Cookbook is the ideal gift.
The book celebrates and highlights many of the traditions and innovations of the Royal Navy’s unique culinary world. Not only does it provide inspirational recipe ideas but also proceeds from the sale of every copy will go towards the charity’s essential work supporting serving Naval personnel, veterans, and their families.
With Britain’s rich naval history, food has frequently played a central role on ships and at events held on board from the staple ‘hard tack’ biscuits of Admiral Nelson’s days to sumptuous feasts showcasing the work of talented Royal Navy chefs. All twenty professional chefs who have contributed to Galley have a connection with the Royal Navy or, as in the case of Michel Roux Jr, have served in the French military. Each has put together a three-course menu – some selected from competition winning menus, others taken from menus they have put together during active service.
The book gives an insight into the traditions of Royal Naval life and stories of naval trivia and British maritime history. These include the strictly observed toasts of Trafalgar Night, commemorating Lord Nelson’s victory in battle to the story of a naval chef’s cookbook which came to light with his own personal recipes from 1923 to the end of the World War II.
Chef Patron of the two Michelin-starred Le Gavroche; Michel Roux Jr has not only provided a mouth-watering seven-hour lamb recipe but has also endorsed Galley – The Royal Navy & Royal Marine Charity Cookbook. “I am so proud to be supporting The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the incredible projects and facilities it provides to improve the lives of the Royal Navy families and veterans. Not only is this book filled with delicious recipes for you and your family, but every purchase will serve to improve the quality of life for all those who serve, enabling this wonderful charity to continue its incredibly worthwhile work.”
With a foreword written by The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, who holds the honorary title of Admiral of the Queen’s Royal Navy, she has also added personal recommendations for those readers who have not found their sea legs yet…
The charity at the heart of Galley was formed in 2007. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity has a single mission to value and support every sailor, marine and Royal Navy family, for life. They fund projects and facilities which boost morale and improve the lives of serving personnel. They partner annually with 60 different organisations, military and civilian charities to deliver bespoke support for Royal Navy families and children. Vulnerable veterans are not forgotten either as they offer a range of support services to ensure their lives are improved.
Thanks to the support of ESS Defence, the Royal Navy’s Platinum Bridge Partner, who have generously underwritten all the production costs associated with the book, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each copy goes directly to the charity.
