Oxfordshire has long been known for its vibrant restaurants, farms, and market scenes as well as its cafes and pubs. This month, we're excited to highlight Mezemas, a family-run company founded by Panny Skrivanos, with a unique offering that delivers the full flavours of Greece right to your door. Arriving in time for your Friday night dinner, this is not a meal to be eaten in or taken out, but rather a genuine feast in a box.

Each box contains a carefully selected assortment of family recipes that are painstakingly prepared with the same care as if you were a visitor in Panny's home, with its roots firmly anchored in Greek culinary history. "I aim to share the flavours and dishes that inspired me to start cooking. I’m proud of my Greek heritage and this selection of food is made up of family recipes and favourites which we love to eat.," Panny explains.

Panny was the driving force behind the much-loved and much-missed Souvlaki Brothers, who you might remember from their award-winning place at Oxford’s Covered Market. Mezemas continues that legacy with classics such as Houmous, Tzatziki, Pastitsio, Prawn Saganaki, and the deliciously comforting Lemon Potatoes and Spanakopita. Each box contains 13 generous dishes, easily enough to feed four people, with leftovers that could last you through the weekend.

The whole premise has been so carefully thought out that all you need to do is heat and eat – they even provide blue paper napkins and a white tablecloth for the complete Greek experience. The range of dishes means the likelihood is you’ll find your personal favourites and perhaps even something new to you.

Greek cuisine is truly celebrated during the Mezemas feast when delicacies like Dolmadakia (stuffed grapevine leaves) capture the depth of cultural heritage. Thirty years ago, not many people in Britain would have accepted the idea of eating food wrapped in a leaf, as Panny reflects on this cuisine.

The Ancient Greek philosopher Plato claimed, ‘knowledge is the food of the soul’, Mezemas is sharing their knowledge, and delivering food with the soul.

Wood as Art Form

Michelle Heather

When I visited FarmED at Shipton-under-Wychwood earlier this year, I could not help but notice some absolutely stunning wood sculptures in the reception area and on display in the café.

Jeremy Catto: A Portrait of the Quintessential Oxford Don

Phillip Baldwin reviews a new biography by David Vaiani

I first met Jeremy Catto at an Oxford University open day in 2002, when we chatted intensely about Tudor History and current affairs. I read Modern History at Oriel College from 2003-2006, the year of Jeremy’s retirement.

Customs and traditions are often things we accept without question. Why do we put candles on a birthday cake? Why is it called a honeymoon? What exactly is mistletoe?
