Newbury Spring Festival was delighted to welcome HRH The Duke of Kent to a performance at St. Nicolas Church, Newbury on Saturday 18 May in his role as Patron of the festival. The Duke attended with his daughter, Lady Helen Taylor, and her husband Timothy Taylor.

The Duke was met by Festival Chairman, and Vice Lord Lieutenant, Graham Barker DL. Representatives from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Newbury Spring Festival and the Greenham Trust were presented to The Duke on his arrival. Those presented included the Festival Director Mark Eynon and General Manager Ashley Morris.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra gave a bravura performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with international soloist Andrei Ionita and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 under the baton of Jonathan Bloxham. Andrei Ionita’s playing was exhilarating and of the highest order. The outstanding performances were greeted with tumultuous applause and endorsed the Newbury Spring Festival’s promise to provide two weeks of world-class music.

The concert was one of many high points in the middle of the Festival with another full week of concerts planned before the closing concert on the 25th May with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

For the uninitiated, Nell Mescal (yes, sister of actor Paul) is an Irish singer-songwriter who hit the festival circuit hard last summer, playing (amongst others) The Great Escape, BST Hyde Park, Boardmasters and Live at Leeds. This year, she’s headed to Oxfordshire and Alex James’ Big Feastival for August bank holiday weekend. Eloise Lonsdale caught up with her to find out more about her musical style and her recently launched EP, Can I Miss it For a Minute.
