Oxford will come alive on 14 and 15 September as the Oxford Preservation Trust (OPT) opens the doors to over 100 buildings for free as part of their annual Oxford Open Doors weekend. This year's program promises to be an interesting journey full of amazing locations to explore and fascinating activities to participate in. Explore hidden gems like the Painted Room, nestled above Cornmarket with its Elizabethan wall paintings and connections to Shakespeare. Experience history firsthand at the bustling Oxford Castle. The famous Oxford Castle & Prison offers visitors the chance to see expert stone carvers at work, take in music from neighbourhood bands, and learn about 1,000 years of history.
For panoramic views, climb to the top of the Mound or take in breathtaking cityscapes from the Carfax Tower and the Sheldonian Theatre, both participating in Open Doors. A firm favourite over the weekend is the chance to get up close to a real Fire Engine and meet the Firefighters who help protect the city every day at Rewley Road Fire Station. Explore the Swing Bridge while you're there; it was created by Robert Stephenson in 1851 and painstakingly restored by the OPT in 2022.
History buffs are in for a treat as they can participate in the Greyfriars 800th anniversary walk or journey back in time at Slade Camp, nestled in the foothills of Shotover Country Park. Local historians will conduct walking tours and former residents will share their stories and talk about what life was like in the camp.
Oxford Open Doors is not only a sightseeing experience but an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at intriguing locations like Oxford University's Real Tennis Court, the New Theatre, and the renowned Oxford Union Debating Chamber. The esteemed Oxford Colleges will also open their doors including Christ Church, Pembroke, Worcester, Exeter, Mansfield, Harris Manchester College (where the D-Day Landings were planned), and many more.
Anna Eavis, CEO of Oxford Preservation Trust, says, "We're thrilled to be hosting Oxford Open Doors once again! Since 2008, this event has offered everyone a chance to explore the hidden corners and rich tapestry of their city, free of charge. Open Doors allows you to experience Oxford's oldest and newest buildings, beautiful gardens, and surprising discoveries.”
