The Abbey has scooped a live appearance and Q&A with Nick Wallis who broke the news of the scandal of the Post Office debacle, now on all major news channels and all over social media.
TV presenter, ITV drama consultant and journalist Nick Wallis tells the true story of how hundreds of innocent people fought to clear their names against the Post Office's refusal to accept responsibility for its failings. Proud pillars of their communities were stripped of their jobs and livelihoods. Many were forced into bankruptcy and or borrowed from friends and family to give the Post Office thousands they did not owe. The really unlucky ones were sent to prison.
Nick Wallis, who acted as series consultant for the ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office says the ITV press office have done an excellent job of promoting the drama where the all-star cast have used their profiles to raise awareness of the series and the story itself.
From The Abbey:We are proud to be involved in such an important event. As a community venue we would welcome the opportunity for local press to cover any aspect of the story. It’s unbelievable how the ITV drama has brought this important story to the front of the nation’s mindMet have finally confirmed they were investigating the possibility of a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice at the Post Office (the cover up) and - in a completely new development - the possibility that the Post Office's practice of initiating debt recovery procedures against its Subpostmasters without properly investigating the source of their discrepancies might amount to fraud.
The nations press have continued in recent days to cover the story resulting in measures being considered by the government to clear the names of hundreds of sub-postmasters convicted in the Post Office Horizon scandal. More than 700 branch managers were convicted of false accounting, theft and fraud based on faulty software. Fewer than 100 people have had their convictions quashed.
