Yvette Fielding started her working life as an actor and at the age of 18 became the youngest presenter on the popular BBC children’s TV show, Blue Peter. Over the course of her career, she has become synonymous with ghouls and hauntings as the frontwoman of paranormal shows including Most Haunted and Ghosthunting With…

Yvette is currently touring the UK with her stage show Most Haunted, and this autumn, the ‘First Lady of the Paranormal’ has released her second book in a spooky series illustrated by Hannah Shaw. This time the focus is on castles and Oxfordians will be thrilled and chilled to find Oxford Castle featured, along with other ghostly places in the UK and across the world. Yvette comments, “I’m delighted this year that children and their families will have Most Haunted Castles to scare them silly as the nights draw in…it’s been an amazing experience jotting down all of the ghoulish and terrifying things that have happened to me and the crew through the years”.

With Halloween coming up at the end of the month, we wanted to find out…

What Makes Yvette

Happy?

So many things but I suppose spending time with my wonderful family and fabulous friends. I’m very lucky.

Sad?

Being apart from my family. They are my world.

Confident?

Wearing the right outfit always helps me feel confident. It’s like putting on armour. I like to feel protected when performing or filming. Even a dash of red lipstick will have me walking taller.

Angry?

Politicians. I’d like to think there are some out there that want to put our country and its people first. And rude people.

Reflective?

Old photographs. Sometimes I’ll look through my old photos and cry. I miss certain people that have passed over and I cry happy tears for the happy times and the sad ones, too.

Scared?

As if you couldn’t guess. Being alone in a haunted house. Especially if there’s been a murder or evidence of a violent poltergeist. I have to wear extra big girl pants for this. I’m always scared but I always like to go back for more. I suppose it’s like riding a rollercoaster. Terrified and screaming, and yet exhilarating all at the same time.

Most Haunted Castles by Yvette Fielding, illustrated by Hannah Shaw (Penguin, Random House 2024) can be found at all good booksellers for £7.99.

Andrew Gilmour speaks to me from Berlin where he is the Executive Director of the Berghof Foundation, an organisation dedicated to peacebuilding and conflict resolution around the world. He’s just come back from a holiday in his native Scotland which, he smilingly informs me, was apparently the only place not blessed with sun.
